To get a better sense of the characters, I know I hadn't told much about them, so I decided to set up what they were about before and after the outbreak to understand their personas.
Justin - The big brother to Alex, he can be overprotective of his little brother. From Seattle, he worked as manager at Gamestop and was planning on proposing to his long time girlfriend, Rebecca, after his road trip with Alex. It is learned too that Justin was the only one left to call himself Alex's relative. He was the main characters leader, the foundation of the group until he disappeared in Topeka. He had made his way north, finding a stopping point in Chicago, where he became group leader again. He met his fate in Bull Creek when he allowed the horde to take him down, moments after admitting to Alex that he was tired and ready to give up. Alex is the one that kills him after he turns.
Alex - Little brother to Justin, he may look like him, but was the opposite of him. Alex was known for being stubborn and having a temper. He lived in Seattle in an apartment, working at Starbucks and playing in his friends band. He considers Justin his only family. He tells Avery his past, the only time he has told anyone. It's revealed that he used to argue and fight with his parents a lot and they disowned him. He believed they never wanted him in the first place and tells that he was a premature infant when he was born. He fell in love with Avery early in the outbreak, but kept his feelings in check since he was more concerned for their survival. After his brother's death and thinking Avery is dead, he fell into depression, isolation, and distrust of others. He died momentarily from starvation and dehydration, when Kevin brought him back to life after performing CPR. After letting his bottled feelings out by killing the fake SGC and Trevor, he takes Avery with him into the deep woods in Canada, where he has a son with her. To keep them safe, he worked on building walls, traps, creating weapons, and stocking up.
Avery - Best friends with Holly and Keith, she never had any brothers or sisters and wasn't really paid any attention to by her divorced parents. She was shy and passive until the outbreak happened. Despite Keith having strong feelings for her, she never seen him that way, which causes issues when Alex comes along. Avery becomes close to Alex when they're alone, with him being the only one she can be around to get sleep. After she left Bull Creek, she got used to being alone, quite challenging for her to be around Sebastian and the SGC. During the final book(s), she begins to struggle with trusting Trevor and Alex, when Trevor wants her to give him a chance. It didn't help when Alex flipped out on her. She leaves for Canada with Alex, where they have a son together.
Holly - Best friends with Avery and Keith, she was the popular girl in school, and dating the popular guy, John (even when he was cheating). Her family was wealthy, making her more favorable in school. At first in the outbreak, she was depressed and cried a lot, but came out of that shell during her time around Jenny and Keith (she wanted to be the strong one of the group). During the apocalypse, Holly has had a total of four short term boyfriends, each one having died in front of her (John, Joel, Nick, and Jared). In her journal, she talks about her strong crush on Justin and admits Alex is hot. After she returned to her hometown in Colorado, she goes home and kills her undead parents. After, she resided in a small cabin by herself. It's safe to believe that she died after Paul and his group left.
Keith - Best friends with Avery and Holly, he was outspoken and active on the basketball team in school. He had a crush on Avery for years, but never had a chance with her, even when he was drunk and tried to kiss her. After being beaten in Lubbock outside of WalMart, he developed the attitude of no longer caring and to live it up. His jealously is well known once Alex comes along, hating that he spends time with Avery and that she preferred being around Alex more (she trusted him better with safety and her life than anyone else until the SGC comes along). He dies from his injuries when the bus wrecks.
Jenny - From Lubbock, she was popular in her class and loved hanging out with friends at stores to buy makeup, hair products, clothes, and shoes; and having a crush on Zackary. She leaves her home after her dad tells her to (once he was attacked). Even as she progressed along, she remained fearful of the infected and never really adapted to the new world. She becomes attached to Jeremiah, seeing him as a father figure. In Bull Creek, her weakness takes over as she is attacked by the horde. Alex is the one that kills her after she turned when Holly and everyone else (aside from Evan) decided to not take part in killing their undead friends.
Trevor - From Ohio, Trevor had spent time in an asylum when the outbreak happened. He was stuck there for awhile before the first members of the SGO came along. At first he disagreed with the rules set by the SGO leader, Charles, because he didn't want to kill people. But his views changed after he joined Avery and the others. Especially after what happened in Bull Creek, his tolerance for the living starts to dwindle, or at least toward Alex. Like Keith, Trevor hated him for different reasons. One reason never mentioned as to why he hated Alex was because Kevin and his group favored Alex over him. He figured that since he was in a survivalist group before and can handle weapons, he assumed that Kevin would give him a shot at leading; but in When It Ends/Aftermath, when they find the former SGC guys, Kevin instead chooses Alex to lead them at one point. Trevor turned against Kevin and Alex for that reason, he didn't want Alex being placed in charge. His time is met when he tries to murder Alex as they fought, but Alex injures him and allows the infected to end it for him.
Sebastian - He was also from Colorado, and not knowing, had seen Avery, Holly, and Keith before which was during a field trip in Denver. Sebastian was always a trouble maker, and talked a lot. He tells Avery he thinks it's a nervous disorder that he developed as a child. Alongside his four friends (never really mentioned), they fell into a life of crime in their late teens. Before the outbreak, they had robbed a bank and left the state, originally seeking Los Angeles as their hideout, but then the outbreak occurred. While in Los Angeles, fighting the infected, he met Heather (described as a goth girl with tattoos, piercings, and a love for metal music) and the group goes to Oregon. Around the time Avery was stranded in Oregon, Sebastian's friends and girlfriend died during a supply search. He later gets along with the SGC and Avery, proving to be the only person in the world that remains optimistic, even when he's in the process of turning. While in the labs, he is bitten and scratched on his left arm (an emotional moment for Avery and Kevin). After talking to them, still smiling, he allowed himself to drop down into the horde just so he didn't have to turn and to save them the grief of one of them shooting him.
Kevin - From Los Angeles, before the outbreak, Kevin was a graphic designer and the older brother to his siblings, Mick and Natalie (he related Sebastian and Avery to them because of similar resemblances). He was also in a relationship, but a week before the outbreak, she left him for someone else. When the dead came, he was at work, his first experience was when he was trying to rush out. Few of his coworkers were already infected and attacking the others. Immediately after making it out, the first place he raced to was his parents house. While there, his parents were already turned, so he had to put them down. During his battle with them, his sister kept screaming for him to help her. By the time he reached her, it was too late. Mick had been bitten by their father (who was first to turn after becoming infected while out filling his car with gas). In turn, Mick and Natalie had locked themselves in the back bedroom, where he had turned and attacked her, biting on the back of her head. Anyways, Kevin put his brother down and had sat on the floor with Natalie for her last moment of life before dying in his arms. He put her down before she could turn. After having to kill his family, Kevin had shut himself off from others for weeks until he saved Wyatt, Joseph, Norman, and Seth when they were out on the street walking around. From there, the group grew as they found all the others and he automatically was chosen as the leader of the now named SGC. The falling out that he and the other remaining SGC had from the former members is a long story which will be mentioned on another page. After leaving Oklahoma behind, Kevin returned to Los Angeles and back to his parents house where he intended on living until the dead came for him too. Not much is known from there, he could have died in peace, chaotically, or he could have caught up with Ryan and traveled overseas.
Ryan - Also from Los Angeles, Ryan was a member of the United States Marine Corps, a husband, and a father to a little girl (he never talked about them because he figured they had died at the start of it all). While there, one day, as he was saluting the flag, there had been screams on the base. That was when it happened for him, the infected had reached the base and was attacking everyone. He managed to survive by taking one of the guns being used on the training range and was using the rifle when needed. He remained on base, keeping himself locked in the dorm he stayed in. Eventually he left for food and water, gathering what supplies was there and was also the one to collect the bus that the SGC used to travel by. Thanks to him, the SGC had an endless supply of MREs, weapons, and ammo. A couple of months into the outbreak, he met Kevin and the others when they made their way to the base to search for weapons and ammo. With Kevin's way of thinking and ability to settle any disagreements, Ryan had joined them. He's outspoken and always active, never wanting to take a break; and that was why he decided to return to Los Angeles. But got the idea to get a boat and travel overseas, in search of others and to kill more infected.
